2016 Sacajawea Heritage Days Knap-in Report

Sacajawea Heritage Days, organized and sponsored by Friends of Sacajawea State Park (FSSP), is intended to give the school children, and the general public, a visual history lesson of the period around the time of Lewis and Clark’s epic journey. This is a two day event. On Friday, the combined school districts of the Tri-Cities (Richland, Kennewick and Pasco) have a field trip to the Park for their 5^th and 6^th graders (between 1,500 and 2,000 youngsters). On Saturday the Park is open to the public and the number of people who show up is almost equal to Friday’s attendance.

And while the Puget Sound Knappers have been supporting Sacajawea Heritage Days for a number of years (flintknapping demos and lessons by members of the PSK have always been one of the star attractions), this was the first year that the Tri-Cities clan decided it should become a regular PSK Knap-in.

The Park provided a great space for the knapping, display tables and inexpensive camping.

Turnout was good for the first formal knap-in. And all the PSK member were kept extremely busy, first with the seemingly endless stream of 5^th and 6^th5 on Friday and another seemingly endless stream of adults and youngsters on Saturday.

This two day knap-in was topped off by a great Pulled-Pork potluck dinner provided by the hosts!
